About Erika Karl

Erika Karl is a fine artist, illustrator, and designer from Brooklyn, NY, now based in Cleveland, Ohio. She finds inspiration by observing the gaps between human society and natural phenomena. She likes to walk the line between serendipity and synchronicity. Using what she observes in this crossroad, she seeks to inspire self-reflection and encourage curiosity about the mysteries of life and death.

As part of her process, Erika enjoys the alchemy of taking something from nature and making it useful to create art. Her inks range from earthy, muted tones of black walnuts to vibrant colors from berries and plant matter. Her work often features ink-wash paintings preserved through archival printing, a method chosen to maintain the ephemeral beauty of natural inks. These prints capture the transient nature of her art, highlighting themes of impermanence and renewal. In addition, she creates her watercolor paintings with archival natural Earth pigments, such as ochre. She prides herself on sourcing natural pigments that are sustainably and ethically sourced.

Today, she has an ongoing series, The Oracle Project, which will eventually become an oracle deck. You can read more about this project here. She is also actively working on a new series of watercolors with a folklore theme. Her first paintings from this series are based in lore she had heard about as a child.

Additionally, Erika enters the world of crafts with "Erika's Attic", a side project that merges fine art with crafting to encourage creativity and dismantle crafting stigmas. At the moment, Erika's Attic offers downloadable paper crafts that allow her audience to explore the joy of making something without judgment.
